One of the new and exciting ways to replace missing teeth is implants. Implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth without burdening the surrounding teeth. Or a few implants can be used to replace many or all of your teeth. Implants have the best track record for long term success!
Implant placement happens in two different steps: First the implant is surgically placed into the jawbone, which is a painless procedure with proper freezing techniques. After the implant is placed we wait a few months to allow the bone to heal around the implant and anchor it in place in a phase called osteointegration. After osteointegration occurs the second step is placement of the prosthetic tooth. An impression is taken to determine the exact orientation of the implant in the mouth so a dental lab can fabricate a crown. This crown is then attached to the implant with a screw, and can now function as a normal tooth.
Implants can also be used to anchor in complete dentures, in a procedure called “All on Five”. A minimum of five implants are required to anchor a complete denture. Once the implants are placed a denture can be fabricated that only replaces the teeth making the denture much more comfortable to wear. Poor retention or rubbing on your gums is no longer an issue.
